In reply to keith7198. Yes! I keep recommending this to people who automatically turn their noses up at "another shark movie". I guess Sharknado has kinda put people off the subgenre.... more's the pity.

These kinds of monster-in-a-box films, similar to Phone Booth, Buried and their ilk, live of die on both the conviction of the acting and the charisma of the direction. Thankfully, this film had both in high quality (IMO).

Such a nice surprise. I think this flew under a lot of radars. I didn't have high expectations. I mean reasonably so, right? But I was caught up in it from start to finish.

Agreed! I, too, had low expectations (having no idea how they could fill 90+ minutes screen time with a bird (and a seagull) on a rock, but came away pleasantly surprised at how quickly the time passed. As for your review, sentences like this, "Part of the joy in watching The Shallows is coming from seeing a director use the widescreen palette with such precision and technical virtuosity with such skill and enthusiasm." are what make you the master of the field!
