I agree, the whole Lucy/stepmother narrative felt half-assed and tacked on, an afterthought by the writers to widen the story beyond Gru/Dru. I think had the film focused on that as the chief plot point rather than Gru's twin brother the film might have worked better. Alas, I am not making these movies but I only wish I had.

Agree, except about the minions. Seemed to be trying to give something for everybody so much was thematically beyond children and much was narratively sub-adult. I thought there was more to be made of the Lucy character’s relationship to the kids but it was treated shallowly and as an occasional aside.

In reply to Wendell W Ottley. I just think the Minions are the most overused and unfunny elements of this entire franchise. Sure, they're okay in minor supporting roles (which they get here) but I'm over their ubiquitous presence in almost every facet of popular culture now.
