Hey all!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It’s been a while since I’ve been back in the old writer’s seat for Fernby Films. \u00a0In fact, the last I believe I set an article up was when I set up my nominations two years ago, and I’ll admit, I was pretty impressed looking back at my thoughts over some of the major gongs handed out that year.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And so I thought it was time to give it another crack.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Now, I have to admit that this year’s nominations are a little harder to decide over those from 2010, but here anyway are my thoughts for who will win this year at the Academy Awards…<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Let’s kick off the proceedings as we did last time with the Best Performance By An Actor In A Leading Role<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0THE NOMINEES<\/strong><\/span>: \u00a0Demian Bechir,\u00a0A Better Life<\/em>; George Clooney,\u00a0The Descendants<\/em>; Jean Dujardin,\u00a0The Artist<\/em>; Gary Oldman,\u00a0Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy<\/em>; Brad Pitt,\u00a0Moneyball<\/em>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The field this year is impressive, with some familiar faces up for contention and a couple of new faces eager to steal the spotlight. \u00a0And, naturally, it’s one of those new faces that is going to take home the award this year, with my pick being Jean Dujardin for his performance in the feel-good French film, The Artist<\/em>. \u00a0Dujardin has come virtually out of nowhere in this role, although foreign film aficionados will remember him fondly from his OSS 117<\/em> films (a must see for those who love a good spy parody – I saw the first and have to admit, it was hilariously funny!).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

My dark horse is the winner of the Golden Globe in this category this film: George Clooney in The Descendants<\/em>. \u00a0Clooney has proven himself over time to be one of Hollywood’s nice guys, and also over the last decade of Hollywood’s truly gifted all-rounders, with numerous nominations for directing, producing as well as acting. \u00a0Golden Globes were once a huge barometer for success at the Academy Awards, but this year it’s most likely that Clooney may have to settle for a smaller prize (details to follow…!)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I did see Moneyball<\/em>, and I thought that Brad Pitt did an exceptional job, but I have to say that it isn’t quite Oscar-worthy. \u00a0Gary Oldman’s nomination for George Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy<\/em> comes as no surprise, also. \u00a0I’ll admit that I hadn’t even heard of A Better Life<\/em> until the Oscars nominations were announced, so I’m not too sure what to say about it. \u00a0The only thing that I am aware of in relation to this film is that it was directed by Chris Weitz, director of About A Boy<\/em> and Twilight: New Moon<\/em>… \u00a0So, to get an Oscar nom for working with a director of a Twilight<\/em> film deserves a standing ovation. \u00a0But not the award.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This man will not win a Best Actor Oscar this year - or ever again, we hope.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Now, let’s move over to the other side and have a look at the Best Performance By An Actress In A Leading Role<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

THE NOMINEES<\/strong><\/span>: \u00a0Glenn Close, Albert Nobbs<\/em>; Viola Davis, The Help<\/em>; Rooney Mara, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo<\/em>; Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady<\/em>; Michelle Williams, My Week With Marilyn<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

There are two front runners for the award this year: Meryl “I’ve been nominated how many times now?!?” Streep and Viola Davis. \u00a0The Brits voted for Streep. \u00a0They also voted in droves for Margaret Thatcher. \u00a0YOU STILL HAVEN’T LEARNT YET, HAVE YOU? \u00a0Hence, my nod goes to Viola Davis, for her spectacular performance in The Help<\/em>. \u00a0And the good news? \u00a0She won’t be up for Golden Raspberry, like former Oscar winner Halle Berry! \u00a0Yay!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

My dark horse has to go to Michelle Williams for My Week With Marilyn<\/em>. \u00a0It would be so great to see her win, in the role of one the world’s most beautiful actresses, who was sadly never destined to win an Academy Award herself.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Glenn Close has received her sixth Oscar nomination, and this is her third for Leading Actress. \u00a0But the cross-dressing thing feels a little dated, what with Hilary Swank receiving the Leading Actress Oscar in 2000 for Boys Don’t Cry<\/em> and Julia Andrews earning a nomination for Victor Victoria<\/em> at the 1983 Oscars. \u00a0She is a superb actress, that is of no doubt, but I think this has just come out in the wrong year. \u00a0And Rooney Mara? \u00a0Slow year, Academy?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0We’ll jump over to the supporting role nominations, starting with Best Performance By An Actor In A Supporting Role<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0T<\/strong><\/span>HE NOMINEES<\/strong><\/span>: \u00a0Kenneth Branagh, My Week With Marilyn<\/em>; Jonah Hill, Moneyball<\/em>; Nick Nolte, Warrior<\/em>; Christopher Plummer, Beginners<\/em>; Max von Sydow, Incredibly Loud & Extremely Close<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Hmm. \u00a0I’ll stick with the popular vote and go with Christopher Plummer. \u00a0But in my heart, I really want Jonah Hill to take the Oscar.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The popular vote goes with Octavia Spencer, and I tend to agree with this. \u00a0Again, the Academy must have been having a slow year to nominate Melissa McCarthy. \u00a0Okay, I enjoyed Bridesmaids<\/em>, and she was very good in the film, but good enough for an Oscar nomination, though? \u00a0I’m afraid not.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0I’ll skip over the documentary nominations, as I don’t have a clue about any of them (and Senna<\/em>\u00a0wasn’t nominated for Best Documentary Feature (Boo!)), and Best Short Animated Film and jump into Best Animated Feature Film<\/strong>!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0THE NOMINEES<\/strong><\/span>: \u00a0A Cat In Paris<\/em>; Chico & Rita<\/em>; Kung Fu Panda 2<\/em>; Puss In Boots<\/em>; Rango<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0So, DreamWorks have two films up for nomination this year. \u00a0Interesting. \u00a0Since neither of them will win. \u00a0The foreign films haven’t made a murmur in any of the previous major awards ceremonies. \u00a0Which means, my vote goes to that little chameleon… Rango<\/em>! \u00a0I thought this was the best animated film of 2011, as KFP2<\/em>\u00a0lacked the original appeal that made the original so wonderful, and Puss In Boots<\/em>, while somewhat enjoyable (I saw it on my flight to Perth – thanks, QANTAS!), it doesn’t cut the mustard to be the best.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0I’ll also skip Best Short Film and jump into the writing categories, starting with Best Original Screenplay<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0THE NOMINEES<\/strong><\/span>: \u00a0Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist<\/em>; Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig, Bridesmaids<\/em>; J.C. Chandor, Margin Call<\/em>; Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris<\/em>; Asghar Farhadi, A Separation<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The popular pick would be to back the favorite and go with The Artist<\/em>. \u00a0Right? \u00a0No. \u00a0I’m giving my nod to Asghar Farhadi for A Separation<\/em>. \u00a0It’s a gutsy piece of work, looking at divorce in the country of Iran, through the eyes of a couple faced with the dilemma of whether to stay in Iran to care for family or move for better opportunities for their daughter. \u00a0My back up is definitely one of the long shots of the group, but it’s Annie Mumulo & Kristen Wiig. \u00a0The dialogue written for Bridesmaids<\/em>\u00a0was sharp and very funny.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Now it’s time for Best Adapted Screenplay<\/strong>…!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0THE NOMINEES<\/strong><\/span>: \u00a0Alexander Payne and Nat Faxon &\u00a0Jim Rash,\u00a0The Descendants<\/em>; John Logan, Hugo<\/em>; George Clooney, Grant Heslov and Beau Willimon, The Ides of March<\/em>; Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin (story by Stan Chervin), Moneyball<\/em>; Bridget O’Connor and Peter Straughan, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Here’s the Oscar that Clooney has a strong chance in. \u00a0But he won’t win. \u00a0The award will be given for his other film: The Descendants<\/em>. \u00a0Moneyball<\/em>\u00a0won’t get the nod, as while it may be a good film, films about baseball just don’t win Academy Awards. \u00a0Hugo<\/em>\u00a0and The Ides of March<\/em>\u00a0will fight out for the minor placings on the night, with Hugo<\/em>\u00a0coming in as my dark horse for this group.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Now’s it’s the part of the show where we get the audience to sing along and vote for the Best Original Musical Score and Best Original Song. \u00a0Let’s warm up our throats with the Best Original Scores<\/strong>, and-a-one-and-a-two-and-a…!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0John Williams nominated twice! \u00a0Howard Shore is also nominated! \u00a0Yet Ludovic Bource will steal the crown! \u00a0Bource’s score has been the toast of the awards scene this year, and will continue on its merry way to the Oscar. \u00a0I did thoroughly enjoy Williams’ score for TinTin<\/em>, as well as Shore’s work for Hugo<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0My nod must go to A Separation<\/em>. \u00a0If it gets this award and the Best Original Screenplay award, it will have made a major accomplishment for Iranian and Middle Eastern cinema. \u00a0And I sincerely hope that it does.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Well, we’ve hit the home stretch and it’s now down to the final two awards: Best Director and Best Film. \u00a0So, without any further delay, as these Oscar blogs can go on for ages, here’s the nominees for Best Director<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This year’s Academy Awards will most likely be known as “the Feel Good Oscars”. \u00a0And the one film that has helped to some this up has been The Artist<\/em>. \u00a0And so, the Oscar for Best Director will go to Michel Hazanavicius, as it has been through all the previous major awards ceremonies this year. \u00a0The world has been crying out for a film like this, and Hazanavicius has certainly delivered that, and more.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Which leaves the nominations for Best Film<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And thus far, of all the films which have received the Best Picture Academy Award<\/strong> (currently 85 in total prior to 2012), 62 have also received the Best Director Academy Award.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Based on this, the Oscar for Best Film goes to… The Artist<\/em>. \u00a0If there was to be an upset on the cards, though, my money would be on The Descendants<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0The Help\u00a0<\/em>pulling off this coup. \u00a0But history can be an excellent indicator with regards to these two awards.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It’s been a while since I’ve been back in the old writer’s seat for Fernby Films. In fact, the last I believe I set an article up was when I set up my nominations two years ago, and I’ll admit, I was pretty impressed looking back at my thoughts over some of the major gongs handed out that year.<\/p>\n

And so I thought it was time to give it another crack.<\/p>\n
